Dvorak Expeditions is your access to the stunning canyons of Gunnison and Arkansas Rivers
Outdoor educators, Bill and Jaci Dvorak founded Dvorak Expeditions in 1985 in the scenic Arkansas River Valley of Colorado. As early pioneers of western whitewater river rafting in the Rocky Mountains, Dvorak Expeditions own the first outfitter license by the state of Colorado. Proud to be a family-run business, Dvorak’s river trips, float fishing trips, whitewater skills camp, and swift water rescue training programs, they are world-renowned adventures that have been featured in ESPN, National Geographic, the Chicago Tribune, travel books, and television specials.
Bill and Jaci Dvorak have been avid outdoor educators since they were married in 1969, having taught in Australia, New Zealand, Asia, and England where they managed outdoor leadership courses for Outward Bound. In 1979, Bill Dvorak assumed leadership of the Partners River Program, an outdoor educational program for disadvantaged youth, based in Denver. They purchased the organization in 1984 and later renamed it Dvorak’s Kayak & Rafting Expeditions.
At last count, Bill Dvorak has accumulated over 70,000 miles of river running experience, and has personally instructed the Dvorak Expeditions guide-training course for over 40 years. Bill has been an avid fly fishing guide for more then 50 years and has lead many expeditions down the Gunnison and Arkansas Rivers.
Stories to tell of many a 'stone fly hatch' famous in the "Gunny Gorge".

We offer float and wade/walk fishing trips on some of the wildest and most productive Rainbow and Brown Trout fishing waters in the West on six rivers in Colorado and Wyoming including on those awarded “Gold Medal” status by the Colorado Division of Parks & Wildlife, the Arkansas River and the Gunnison River Gorge as well as the San Miguel River. “Blue Ribbon” water in Wyoming on the North Platte River for spring trips.
Our guided fishing trips run for a 1/2 day or up to 3 days. We are happy to customize your fishing trip to give you the best value and variety on these western trout rivers. Our guides are experienced professionals who know the best flies and tackle to fish with, depending on the specific river and season you choose to cast off. Our state of the art rafts are custom set ups for a maximum of two anglers and guide.
We use inflatable rafts as our craft of choice but also have drift boat “Dories” available by special arrangement on certain rivers. You are welcome to bring your own gear or we have rental items available for all our trips; camping and tackle items. Your guides will always have tackle available to provide the right flies, lures for you to catch that big fish!
Gunnison River Gorge - Colorado
Custom float fishing trips on the Gold Medal waters of the Gunnison River Gorge are fully guided for both Fly and Spin rods.
It is a Catch & Release fishery with a fish count of over 7000 Rainbow and Brown trout per mile and 1000 of which are 14-35 inches. Gold Medal fisheries are 60 pounds of fish per acre and the Gunnison River has over 400 pounds per acre!
Accessible only by foot, a 1 mile hike into Gorge and the day before your trip Dvorak Expeditions will horse pack of boats and gear into the Gorge. The Gunnison Gorge is a wilderness canyon for those who are willing to literally go the extra mile. A trip to the canyon floor requires a hike of one mile down a steep trail. Guests are expected to carry their personal gear in Dvorak's issued dry bag backpacks (3.3 cu.ft), provided by Dvorak Expeditions.
Arkansas River - Colorado
The Arkansas offers Gold Medal fishing and the best Trout fishing in Colorado.
Our float fishing trips are available April – September season. These float fishing trips will take you down the river to otherwise inaccessible fishing sections.
The rafts or (drift boats pre-arranged) will be set up with only 2 anglers per raft and the pace of your journey down the river will depend on the quality of the fishing conditions in the season. You will join the other guests rafting for hikes and lunch. Otherwise you will most likely keep your own pace throughout the day.
North Platte River - Wyoming
In the midst of the Gold Medal and Wild Trout waters of the North Platte River, you can fish from Colorado right into Wyoming.
A perfect combination of whitewater thrills and trout fishing action.
The primary reason for this reputation is the river’s inaccessibility. The only way to fish the entire corridor is by float fishing. Our CUSTOM fishing trips put two anglers and one guide in each raft. This allows you to fish downstream at your own pace. To allow for adequate time for fishing and full enjoyment of the canyon, it is best to plan a three-day trip.
Please NOTE: Colorado and Wyoming Fishing Licence Required
San Miguel River
Colorado fly fishing on the San Miguel is one of the state’s best kept and newest trout fishing secret for anglers. Expert opinion is that “it’s the highest quality fly fishing destination in the state.” 3-4 days : May – June (raft) or June – Sept (canoe).
Headwaters in Telluride to the confluence of the Dolores is 72 miles. A good fast waters for excellent Trout fishing given the sections and conditions of the water run off each seasonal period. (May – July) Wade/walk options later in the summer. Rafts are set up with 2 anglers per raft and custom fishing guide. Colorado fishermen will need Colorado licenses for all days that you are fishing.
Trips varying in length from 1-5 days can be done on the San Miguel and trips of 6-12 days are available by combining the San Miguel with the Dolores and Colorado Rivers.
